Best Lipstick Shades For Spring

Contrary to popular belief, I don’t just wear red lipstick all the time.

Wait, no….I do.

BUT every now and then I like to mix things up a bit and wear new lipstick shades like hot pink, coral, beige, etc.

I find that each season calls for a different shade – warmer and richer tones for winter and brighter tones for spring and summer.

Today I’m talking all about the best shades to wear in the springtime – shades that will really make your lips pop and go with a lot of the pastels you’ll be wearing for spring. Keep reading to see my favorite picks!

This post has a really great roundup of lipstick shades that go with everything for spring! I love The Petite Bijou's suggestions on which color goes with what! Great post!

Which shade is right for me?

That depends! It’s all about undertones in your skin. Makeup artists and fashion stylists use undertones to determine what should be used to enhance your natural beauty.

We all have either one undertone – warm or cool. So how do you know which one you are?

Take a look at your wrist – what colors are your veins? Are they mostly blue or green? Somewhere in between?

If you have blue veins, you have a “cool” undertone. If you have green veins, you probably have “warm” undertones.

The shades you should wear for lipstick (and with clothes) all depend on which undertone you are. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you HAVE to wear them – it just means that those particular shades will enhance your natural features.

If you’re cooler, like me – you want to go for darker and earthier shades. In lipstick terms, you’re looking at rich reds, browns, plums, etc.

If you are warmer, you want to go for bolder and more “popping” shades. In lipstick terms, this means bright reds, corals, pinks, etc.

But what if I don’t like those shades?

No worries! I tested out the theory of trying the opposite undertones and found that some work really well depending on what I was wearing.

For example, I wore a light blue dress and paired it with a very hot pink. It looked great! However pairing white with a coral lipstick did me no favors.

You have to experiment and find out what works for you. I always suggest getting mini versions of the lipstick you want to try before committing to a full sized tube. Try it with different situations and clothes and see how you feel.

My most recommended picks from the bunch….

From the list above, I have 3 go to lipstick shades that look AMAZING with everything I wear. Can you guess which ones they are?

1. Urban Decay’s VICE Lipstick in Spiderweb is my go to red lipstick for my classic vintage look. You’ve seen it in all my pictures and I carry it around EVERYWHERE I go. This lipstick is a retro girl’s dream come true. The whole VICE collection comes in so many flattering and gorgeous shades. Check it out HERE.

2. The Bobbi Brown Lipstick in Sandwash Pink was the lip color Kate Middleton wore at her wedding. I knew I just had to try it! It’s a very very very versatile color. It’s so classy and so natural looking. I can see why Kate loves it so much! I like to wear this lipstick shade during the day for meetings and engagements.

3. NARS Lipstick in Schiap is the gorgeous hot pink lipstick under #4, but it’s my #3 pick! This pink lipstick is GORGEOUS! It’s really pigmented but that’s ok – perfect for when you really want to highlight your lips. I always get compliments when I wear it. Check it out HERE

I hardly ever wear lipstick but when I do, I go for a red with blue undertones. However, I am obsessed with your Chanel pick and may have to add it to my collection! Great post.

I definitely have cool undertones, which is funny because I have fairly olive skin. I definitely love my winter colors more than anything else I wear. Give me a dark red, or purple any day! I try to make the switch to lighter colors in the spring in summer though. I tend to go for more muted tones of what I wear in the winter, if that makes sense. I want to be able to go bright (my dream is to pull off that awesome orange-y pinkish color!), but those colors just never seem to work well for me.
