Elegance is defined as: the quality of being graceful and stylish in appearance or manner
For an everyday look, I usually opt in for dark wash jeans, a comfortable sweater, and boat shoes I can slip into and be on my way. My everyday look my not be considered “elegant” in terms of ball gowns and white gloves, but I believe it comes pretty close to a well put together look that is still graceful and stylish. But on special occasions I gladly indulge in dressing up to the definition of elegant.
Chicago is an odd place to dress up elegantly. This week alone, I’ve had a charity event that I wore this beautiful lace dress to, but it started snowing. Taking photographs outside in the snow isn’t always possible. Taking photographs inside isn’t always possible either. Many public areas in the city require permits – even for fashion blogging. We try to photograph our adventures around the city but during this season we get the short end of the straw. So I was delighted to re-wear this dress for Sunday lunch and share it with you, despite the drizzles.
Today marks the first day of the Style Collective Spring Style Challenge: an uplifting and exciting event where we get to see different themes each day from a variety of bloggers across the country. Today’s theme was incorporating the Pantone Color’s of the year into our wardrobe. If you aren’t familiar with the Pantone Color of The Year, here is an article about the process. The two colors chosen were Rose Quartz and Serenity. These beautiful colors have been in my wardrobe for a long time, so I was so glad I could pick two pieces that conveyed the theme beautifully.
One of the most elegant things about clothing for me is versatility and longevity. The pink coat I am wearing in the photographs is one I’ve had for about 12 years. Yes, 12 years. Quality made items will last as long as possible with the right care. I always re-wear items. Not only does it allow me to make good use of my current wardrobe, but the process allows me to save more money – and here’s why:
You don’t need trends. You just need style
I think timelessness can work in anyone’s favor – it’s just a matter of picking the right pieces. In a previous post on creating an elegant capsule wardrobe, I mention sticking to textures, colors, and patterns you love. My personal weaknesses are lace dresses in beautiful dusky and light colors. This dress is perfect for a brunch, dinner, gala’s, and weddings! Long coats are also a staple in my closet, as they are functional and stylish. Do you have staples in your wardrobe that you can wear over and over again? Isn’t versatility a wonderful thing?
Another key ingredient of the perfect elegant rainy day outfit is the perfect accessory. This lovely gold bar necklace is from a beautiful boutique: Haute Bauble at www.hautebaublevintage.com. The necklace is 18′ long and is ideal for layering. Because of the intricate lace detailing on my dress, I decided that layering would over do it. What I really love about this necklace is that it matches the vintage components of my outfit, pulling the whole look together quite nicely.
Like with all my outfits, I try not to get too complicated with what I want to wear. I think simplicity is best and being elegant is not about what you wear but how you wear it. For tips on finding your personal style, check out my previous post. You don’t need trends, you don’t need the latest and the best. If I can wear a 12 year old coat (and Kate Middleton can wear dresses that are 8 years old) so can you!
After all, elegance and chic is as much of a mindset as it is a way of dressing.
