We all have those days: the ones where you feel defeated, stressed, anxious, or generally overwhelmed. Whether it be personal issues, work issues, or just not enough time on your hands, feeling overwhelmed makes your day a lot harder.
But there’s hope – because you can take a few steps to stop feeling overwhelmed and help you get to a place where you can focus on getting clarity.
I’ve just recently had a day where I felt very overwhelmed. It was related to the future of my blog, Laurels & Dash. There was a moment where I had to really evaluate where I was going with it and how I was going to do that. Let me tell you, it isn’t easy planning ahead!
Already having some stressful thoughts about the future of my blog, the icing on the cake was when I received an email that really put a damper on my blog relaunch. Without going into details – the sender of that email really made me doubt my validity in a networking group I was a part of. Needless to say – I have felt left out for a while but that email definitely woke me up – I was definitely being left out.
So now I was extra overwhelmed. But someone close to me reminded me to take the steps I always preached to others. So I did – and I felt so much better. And now I’m going to share them with you!
Write Down Your Worries
I took out my legal pad and wrote down everything that was troubling me. It really helped take it out of my head and onto another medium. When you write you let things go. I know it may not seem beneficial at first, but once you get into the habit of doing so you’ll gain perspective on what you need to focus on.
Get Some Energy
The last thing you need when you feel overwhelmed is just doing nothing. Get up and get moving. If that means pacing, typing while standing up, or jogging in place – do it! Tension from your head gets into your muscles.
We’ve all had those experiences: you feel stressed, you start getting a headache, and the next thing you know you are getting muscle cramps. Well, stretch it out and move it along. Get your energy invested somewhere else instead of being overwhelmed.
Time To Yourself
Take some time to relax by yourself. You can draw up a bath, listen to some relaxing music, or simply read an uplifting book.
My favorite way to relax is changing into comfortable clothes and reading. Right now I am reading some historical biographies of the Tudor and Medieval era’s. Thats my happy place, my relaxing place.
Talk It Out
Talk things out with a trusted friend or family member. If you need to talk it out with someone who doesn’t know you, there are always helplines for those that are feeling overwhelmed and stressed. Sometimes the physical act of talking things through helps you get them off your chest.
If you are feeling very overwhelmed and stressed you can always call any of these helplines.
Eat Well & Hydrate
Do you know that your diet could be the reason why you are feeling extra stressed? When you are stressed or feel very overwhelmed, more often than not you lose your appetite or are faced with unhealthy nutritional practices.
From now on: eat a balanced diet and stay hydrated. Your body and mind need the fuel. Do not forget about yourself when feeling overwhelmed.
