5 Ways To Cultivate A Healthy Self Image

Working on having a healthy self image may seem like a distant and maybe irrelevant thing. I mean, let’s face it – who has time to work on yourself when there’s so many other things that need to get done?! What about focusing on your career, family, and friends?

Well, hold up – because that’s exactly why you need to step in and take some time for yourself.

I believe that self image is something that many women don’t work on. There’s always something tearing us down – always something else to think about.

Look, I get it – life gets in the way. For a year now I have been building my blog and my business, Bijou Social. I have had to make my peace with ridiculous circumstances and roadblocks.  But through it all, I still valued myself first. Not once did a roadblock every make me doubt my mission to help women feel more glamorous, or help bloggers and businesses simplify their social media. Why? Because from the very start I have always stood my ground (and always will)  and established a wonderfully healthy self image. Not even an earthquake can shake it off.

I want the same for you. Without a foundation, how can a house be built? Without a foundation for yourself, how can you achieve great things? Below are 5 ways to build a healthy self image and stellar confidence.

5 Ways To Cultivate A Healthy Self Image | The Petite Bijou

1. Celebrate Your Positive Qualities

Each and every one of us have qualities that are beyond amazing. We are all born with so many different characteristics and there’s something unique and wonderful about each and everyone of us. If I’m ever feeling self conscious, I just remember how hard I’ve worked to cultivate a healthy self image (despite my disability and physically scarring)  and I stop negative thinking in it’s tracks. I list the qualities I a most proud of and I become grateful for having them.

If you are unsure about what your positive qualities are, I would ask a close friend or family member.

Here are a few questions to think about:

  1. What special talents do I have? What am I known for?
  2. What do people always come to me for? What do my friends need help with?
  3. If I had to quickly list 3 of  my favorite things about myself they would be:

Take these questions and keep the answers as a guiding point to what you’re positive qualities are. And don’t think it’s selfish to be doing an exercise like this! It’s not.

2. Be Uniquely You & Shake It Off

One of the best ways to cultivate a healthy self image is to take those positive qualities and quirky habits and just be uniquely you. The next step? Shake off the haters and the players like T- Swift. You are incredibly unique and no one can take that away from you. One of the reasons I am so passionate about the things I do is because I know that I’m the only one that can do them the way I do them! Having the courage to be you is an amazing feeling that no one can take away from you.

As a business woman and digital influencer, I have my fair share of meanies – it comes with the nature of my business. But I don’t let them sway me because I’m doing my own thing, girl!

When you decide to focus on you instead of other people all that self doubt leaves. Try it. Just log off social media, stop looking at magazines for a day, stop following your competitors, stop listening to negativity and just focus on you. Give it a try and I promise you’ll feel like 90% more confident than you were before.

3. Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone

Getting out of your comfort zone is a good way to practice having a healthy self image. Head outside and explore some place new with the goal in mind of learning more about yourself, your likes, dislikes, etc. The reason our modes may be sour and confidence shaken is because we spend too much time doing and seeing the same things.

I can’t focus on my blog and business 24/7. I can’t sit around inside at my desk all day. That’s insane. So If I’m ever feeling restless or just kind of down I head outside my comfort zone and literally go outside.

I love taking long walks around the city with just a notebook and a camera (sometimes just a cellphone). It’s how I think things through and get inspired. Some of my best ideas have come just from getting a breath of fresh air. Try it! Take a spontaneous walk and see how you feel after an hour.

4. Cultivate Gratitude

One of the best ways to gain a healthy self image and stellar confidence is to cultivate gratitude for the simple joys of life. The Petite Bijou is all about enjoying life’s little treasures and pleasures. Having gratitude for waking up, having your coffee, picking up that amazing new dress, being with friends and loved ones, and going back to bed just makes your day oh so much better.

And I don’t know about you, but I love journaling and writing. One of my favorite ways to practice gratitude is to literally write out everything I am grateful for. I’m even doing a chalkboard method in my business to attract more positive vibes. I am grateful for all the people that have subscribed to my new course, started working with me, or have finished up their projects.

In my personal life I am grateful for the coffee in the morning, my kittens that greet me everyday, and the many opportunities I have throughout the day to work. What are you grateful for?

5. Practice Kindness

Kindess is magnetic. And not only will practicing kindness help you cultivate a healthy self image but it will also help someone else. A smile can be magnetic from just a few feet away. You never know who you can help throughout your day just by smiling. Maybe someone was having a horrible day. And maybe, just maybe, your smile and kind words helped them get better.

Practicing kindness in every situation will skyrocket your confidence because you will be interacting with people all the while sharing your unique and beautiful qualities.

Ways to practice kindness:

  • Hold the door open for people
  • Say good morning/good afternoon/ good evening to everyone you meet
  • Enter the room with a smile and your head held high
  • Give at least 1 stranger a genuine compliment
  • Say the magic words “Please” and “Thank You”
  • Send a nice text/email/voicemail to a friend
  • Celebrate and share other people’s achievements
  • Give your leftovers from lunch to a homeless person
  • Buy a cup of coffee for your coworker or boss

& the list goes on.

The most important takeaway here is it really doesn’t take much to be kind and it helps you become a more confident and happy person.

Extra Glamour Step

Little black dresses and lace and a dash of lipstick do wonders for the confident and glamorous soul. Here are some of my favorites:

Studies have shown that setting and achieving goals is the number one way to improve self esteem so I’ve been trying to set more goals and focus on completing them. We all look for proof that we we’re awesome and when we achieve goals, we’re providing ourselves proof.

This post is awesome. I struggled with myself for years and years; I was just so hard on myself. Since I’ve grown up I’ve learned to treat myself like I would somebody I really love, or the child version of myself. Gratitude helps a ton, too. Being kind to others is also a really really good one… such an easy way to feel happy overall. 🙂
