Bijou Style: The Capsule Wardrobe

The capsule wardrobe: a collection of timeless pieces that will serve you years to come. Why is the capsule wardrobe becoming so popular now? Well, the economy is a start! More and more americans are buying pieces that are both versatile and elegant. (Modern Consumerism: Mindful Shopping in 2016) Building a wardrobe you can be proud to own is not that difficult and you only need a few pieces!

Here are some staples that every capsule wardrobe should contain. They might seem like simple (and slightly) boring pieces, but you’ll wear them in many different ways and also accessorize for a simple and easy to put together look. The key is to invest in these pieces, because they should last you more than a year. 2016 is the year you should spend your money wisely and if you are looking to upgrade your wardrobe – look no further!

Bijou Style: The Capsule Wardrobe. What's great about a capsule wardrobe is that you only need a few staple and investment pieces to build it! These pieces will serve you forever and ever (as long as you take care of them well!) and are versatile throughout all the seasons. Your style will be elegant, sophisticated, and easy to put together! Pin now and save for later. Black Dress

A little (or midi) black dress is a staple wardrobe piece because of it’s versatility throughout the seasons. You can accessorize with many different pieces and makeup looks. Black is always elegant and classy.

One of my favorite black dresses is the TopShop Ruffle Sleeve Dress from Nordstrom

White Dress

A white dress is also a staple piece, especially handy for the summer! You can accessorize this dress with a statement hat and purse when you want a pop of color, like red!

A great white dress is the Perfected Prestige Dress from Dona Morgan available at ModCloth.

Tweed Jacket

No elegant wardrobe is complete without a tweed Chanel style jacket. This is a great business casual piece. If you really want to invest in a piece, this is the one to invest in! A classic Chanel tweed jacket from the Fall 2008 collection, perhaps? Available here.

Another alternative is the Cynthia Tweed Jacket from LKBennet

A Classic Blazer

In case tweed is not your thing, you can easily recreate the look of a tweed jacket with a simple blazer. This is perfect for over your new little black dress or anytime you want to be dressy casual! It will also be a great piece for those future job interviews!

A great classic styled blazer ( in grey)  is this one from H&M, available here.

A Trench Coat or Camel Coat

This fall and winter style is currently trending! Elegant pieces always have a way of coming back into “trending” mode at some point or another! Get a classic trench for a quick and easy chic look.

A great investment is this camel coat by Prada. A budget friendly option is this Belted Wool Coat by Calvin Klein.

A Pump

Be it black, grey, or beige, pumps are always a capsule essential because of their timelessness.

My favorite investment pieces are these pumps by Christian Louboutin. A budget friendly option can be found here from Ann Taylor.

Well Tailored Jeans

Baggy jeans don’t flatter anybody. Pick a pair (or pairs) of jeans that fit you comfortably and if you need tailoring, get it done. Rolling up your jeans is fine (to an extent) but you should really think about getting them tailored if they are too long. It might expensive depending on how much you need done but it will be well worth it.

My favorite pairs of jeans are from Top Shop and H&M. The comfort and material are superb and so is the price!

A Striped Shirt

A little nautical inspiration never hurt anybody, especially the lovely Kate Middleton, who rocks striped shirts like no another! Take a style hint from the Duchess of Cambridge and include striped shirts in your capsule wardrobe.

A great striped shirt is this one by J.Crew

Well Tailored Black Pants

Black pants for work or even cigarette pants are definitely a wardrobe piece you should invest in! They can be worn casually or for work. Get them tailored to suit your style and length!

Classic Sunglasses

Round, cat eye, squared, or oversized, sunglasses are a staple in the capsule wardrobe. They go with almost any look and can instantly maximize your chic factor.

My favorites are these by Celine and these super budget friendly ones found at Nordstrom (like seriously – order them in all the colors!)

Chic Scarfs

Scarfs can be worn in so many different ways, its a wonder why more women don’t use them during the spring and summer! Breezy scarfs are perfect for that retro and vintage glam look.

This one from Banana Republic is a good choice and so is this one Summer Stencil Scarf by Gucci.

I JUST invested in my first pair of capsule shoes… a pair of Loubs! I got the dorsay style since my feet are kind of wide. TBH they sort of kill my feet, but beauty is pain!!
Love your picks. True staples for any closet.

      Hello Annie!

Wow!! I can’t even afford my daily Starbucks coffees right now! Penny pinching at it’s finest. I’ll have to save up for Loubs! I am sorry to hear that they are killing your feet! That’s why I am more preferential to LK Bennett’s shoes, because they are super comfy for me. I’ve always worn LKB when doing formal events that I’ve had to stand for long period of time or walk around quite a bit. Maybe you can find some insoles?

Beauty doesn’t have to be painful – but i suppose any gal would do it for LOUBS <3

This is such a great way to minimize your wardrobe. I have so many pieces that I’ve worn once or twice that are still hanging around in my closet. I love the idea of having a few staple pieces that can take you from year to year without losing it’s appeal and will still keep you on trend. I love the ModCloth dress and the Nordstrom ruffle sleeve dress! Great post Mariam. It’s definitely something to think about. Xoxo

  18. I have a LBD that is PERFECT for my body type that I got at H&M. I also have a structured black blazer from Versace that I got at TJ Maxx for like 34892482% off haha! Definitely my favorite wardrobe staples! I wear them to work a lot. I find that now that I’m a working girl I’m investing in more work-friendly clothes than street style stuff. I can still wear my dress or blazer out, and I love the diversity of the two pieces! Great post 🙂

      Hello Taylor,

H&M has some amazing things! So does TJMaxx. I love that you are working towards investing more work friendly clothes rather than street style. And it’s all pretty interchangeable if you ask me! I’m not usually a jeans person anyways. so my work style is my street style! There’s so many different things to wear to work that don’t have to be boring or plain.
