September is just around the corner! Cooling temps, crisp air, and fall colors will fill your day. Let’s not forget the mandatory pumpkin spiced latte! If you’re anything like me, you like planning ahead. I mean: organized school year, organized fitness, organized meal plans….
But maybe I take it too far. Maybe I don’t. But the one thing I LOVE planning ahead more than others in my wardrobe for the season.
You may not think it’s important to get seasonal staples early, but here’s a situation: It’s late September and you’re getting ready to leave the house to go to work or school. You’ve been rain free for the whole season and haven’t really invested in rain boots when all of a sudden a storm passes through and you have neither a windbreaker or any rain boots. You end up wearing sneakers and a heavier or lighter coat – you’re probably soaked and uncomfortable.
Maybe a little bit of pre-season fashion planning sounds like a good idea now…
This has happened to me sooo many times before my fashionable days. I never planned ahead – even during transition phases, like now. It’s been slightly cooler these past couple of days and we’ve slept with the windows open because it was so nice! So naturally, I pulled out all my summer to fall basics and I’m going to share my favorites with you!
I really like to keep it simple during this transition phase to fall because I’m not a huge shoe hoarder. I have maybe 8 pairs of shoes I just have for all year round. No joke. And among these shoes are my favorite black lace up flats which can be worn with jeans, skirts, dresses – you name it! They are still going to be very trendy for this fall. This pair is only $89.00.
Rain boots are also a must for fall – as you never know when it’s going to pour!
A funny story: this one time I was really late to class because I decided to head out early while it was raining like waterfall! My class was 45 minutes away via the L, Chicago’s train system. My station was 5 blocks away. By the time I got there my shoes has been completely soaked (just plain old sneakers). I ran back home and change them again. The train wasn’t due for another 30 minutes (this happens all the time) and I made it to class 10 minutes late and with ANOTHER pair of soaking shoes.
Lesson: Don’t be me when I didn’t think rain boots where a good investment (what the heck was I thinking?)
Here are some of my favorite (and affordable!!) finds:
There’s nothing quite as versatile as your classic white t-shirt or tank. They are both great for layering and great for keeping casual. I don’t do casual like this too often – but I DO love it for the fall. I’m so down to just throwing a cardigan on everything, especially when the weather channel says its only 47 degrees out in the morning (not looking forward to our famous -40 days).
Green or navy Anoraks are also a basic fall transition piece for when it’s still too warm to wear a full on coat. In these pictures, I am wearing a heavier (but lightweight) green button shirt to mimic an anorak. And you can do the same for those really warm fall days!
Jeans are the best fall transition basic of all time! They are comfortable, stylish, and largely affordable. I know I’ll be adventuring in my light-wash denim jeans so I make sure that they are stretchy enough to be comfy but skinny enough to flatter my petite frame. I always roll up my jeans in case I want to switch to booties for the fall. Any kind of denim will do but here are my favorite and affordable picks:
I love playing up my accessories during the fall because you’re able to layer more. I feel like summer jewelry and accessories should be simple because you don’t want to be wearing too much on a 90 degree day, am I right? Well, fall is perfect for taking those dramatic statement necklaces and finally styling them with your wardrobe. I really love these statement earring from Baublebar and they’re only $19!!! Get them here while this price is still on!
Sunglasses are also a must have fall basic! Mine are only $12 (here) and are super chic with every outfit! They are stylish, affordable, and protect my eyes – couldn’t ask for a better fall staple!
Bijou Styling Tip:
One of the best fall styling secrets is incorporating florals into your wardrobe
Florals for fall?!?! Yes.
You don’t have to wear a floral dress or a floral skirt (but you can definitely pull that off). I think of it as adding hints of floral to your wardrobe. I like to do this with wallets, clutches, and purses. This floral folded crossbody purse from Candied Cottons is the perfect addition to my wardrobe. It’s versatile, FOLD-ABLE, and so insanely chic! For my latest fall like adventure I fit my kindle (full of good reads), my chapstick, lipstick, phone, phone charger, candy, medicine, wallet, id’s, and a few papers in there like a breeze.
And I’m not quite sure why – but florals just work – in any season. I think the colors and patterns are mostly very attractive on everyone and you can wear it with any casual look. In the fall, a purse like this is a cute addition to a midi skirt look or just a chic academic look for contrast. Don’t have a floral purse for all seasons? When you sign up for the Candied Cottons email list (on the homepage here) you can get 20% off your first order! This is a wonderful addition to your wardrobe and would also make a great gift. Don’t wait till Black Friday to get over-marked and overpriced items – start early so you have some $$ to spend on yourself! Am I right or am I right?
I’m pretty excited for this transition phase to start. Bring on the Halloween decor and warm coffee drinks! What are your favorite transition pieces for fall? Let me know which item you really like below!
