If you couldn’t tell already, I’m a bit of an anglophile. There’s even a “British” category on the blog!
Not sure when my love of all things British started, but I do believe it was during my preteen years when I would watch PBS British Mysteries on reruns late at night as I was wired awake with that preteen energy. I remember tuning into programs like Inspector Lynley Mysteries and Midsomer Murders.
So it’s not a surprise that I’m still watching those shows today. And ever since purchasing my Acorn TV subscription, I’ve uncovered (see what I did there) more mysteries to watch and solve!
One of these is Acorn TV’s new series: Queens of Mystery which is a bit like A Series of Unfortunate Events meets Midsomer Murders. It is narrated at points and has a dark humor that you can’t quite pinpoint. And the best part? The leads are ALL female characters. It’s honestly so refreshing to see a Lady Detective and a storyline that revolves around her and her 3 mystery writing aunts who help her solve cases.
And as you may have deduced, I am partnering with Acorn TV this week to bring you yet another fabulous “Get the Look” series with these four amazing women from their new TV show, Queens of Mystery. Keep reading to see how to get their “looks” and tips on creating your own detective lady inspired outfit.

Gotta love Aunt Cat! She’s the rock and roll aunt of Matilda Stone and is also a mystery novel writer. She’s pretty spunky and extremely confident. Cat is probably one of my favorite characters because her outfits are also fearless. She’s not afraid to mix prints and has a strong aesthetic that doesn’t really change throughout the show. To get her look, add a bit of edge to your outfit by using prints and different textures. Also remember accessories: sterling silver hoops and some gunmetal rings make Cat feel more modern. Don’t be afraid to try out different combinations and most importantly, wear what makes you feel comfortable. If you’re looking for a budget friendly way to start your own Cat Stone inspired wardrobe, buy a pair of dark wash denim jeans and a band t-shirt.
Jane Stone is the quintessential bookworm of the family (although they all love books obviously). But Jane owns her own bookstore! I do love Jane’s style because throughout my university days, I tended to look more librarian chic than anything else. I also volunteered at a museum and cute skirts with tucked in blouses and Oxford flats were my go to outfit. To get Jane’s bookish style, adding some modernness to the librarian chic look with paper bag pants and ruffled blouses. Don’t forget smart blazers and your favorite pair of glasses (if you were them of course). On a budget? Look at thrift stores for vintage styled circle skirts and natural colored dresses.
Beth Stone is the boho aunt we all wish we had. She actually reminds me a bit of my own auntie who is all about boho inspired clothing and wearing beautiful beaded necklaces. I love Beth’s style because it is honestly the most down to earth, comfortable, and “everyday” style out of all the characters. Any one of us has worn something Beth probably has in her closet like cropped denim jeans, woven belts, and cute tunics. Her outfit is very attainable and you can find most of these things at any clothing store! If you’re in the states, a great store that would have most of these items is Urban Outfitters. To get this look, have a good pair of denim jeans, platform sandals, and literally any colored 3/4 length sleeve top. Like Cat, Beth is not afraid to add different prints and colors into her wardrobe. Experiment with floral, stripes, and tassels.
Our main character, Matilda Stone, really has this “detective lady” aesthetic going in the series. She has a no nonsense outfit that is pretty much consistent throughout the first season. It’s always the same coat, pants, and shoes. Every now and then she’ll change her button up blouse. I love Matilda’s outfit because it’s so quintessentially “London” detective like transported into the sleepy little village full of books and murder. I recently bought an overcoat that was extremely similar to the one she had but is no longer available (getting our editorial calendar to match fashion seasons is somewhat tricky) but any light blue colored trench coat or overcast can work. Don’t forget black pants and a button down shirt paired with Chelsea boots.
If you haven’t check out this series, you are missing out! I am so in love with this show because it combines all the elements of a good detective series. It’s funny, moody, mysterious, and thrilling. The fact that all the main characters are female is pretty amazing too. I am so happy to finally see a show where there isn’t a huge dependance on a male character to “solve the crime”. Matilda and her three aunts are the ones who work out all the mysteries and find all the clues. This show is a really easy watch and I hope you’ll use my free 30 day trial code to at least check it out! You have nothing to lose.
