Like with everything else, my motto for efficiency is work smarter, not harder.
And I believe that applies to skincare too.
My skincare routine needs to be simple, effective, and not damaging. I’ve learned a lot about the right types of products and treatments to use over the past few months and today I’m sharing the BEST tips I have for creating a skincare routine that will target problems like dryness, acne, wrinkles, fine-lines, sunspots, firmness, and more.
I’m not going to promise anything, but I will be honest and say that the products and treatments I mention here have been helping me become more confident after having TENS/SJS. I feel like my skin looks and feels better now. And that’s crazy considering most patients have tissue healing issues.

Lux Skincare Treatments
So let’s start off with the lux/med spa treatments I do for my scars.
I am actually a resident case at a local hospital. They chose me because SJS is something they want to look into and see firsthand the long lasting effects of this disease. More and more people are being effected and it’s no longer “rare”.
I get three things done at their medspa that rotate every 3 weeks:
1. Hair removal/tightening Laser (yes, for the face – that laser tightens skin!) They do this laser along the crinoline, cheeks, and forehead. It kind of hurts, like a rubber band hitting your face. But it does work and I love it because it gets rid of that peach fuzz on your face over time – and those pores are where little zits come from so closing those up is super helpful.
2. Ultherapy Laser – this is a lifting and tightening laser that helps with using your skins own regenerative properties to repair the layers. Once that happens over time the laser lifts and contours your face. I think it’s really helped me with looking fuller and happier.
3. Microdermabrasion – lifts away dead skin cells and makes things squeaky clean and smooth. Lots of “downtime” in terms of like makeup and other skincare products though. I always get this done in the morning so that I can just relax the rest of the day at home and away from the sun.
With all these treatments, I never go in with makeup and I always stay out of the sun afterwards. I still do my everyday skincare routine, but whoever I have any of these done, I just skip a night. No biggie. Just stay in and pop in some box sets and bring on the popcorn.
Products I Swear By
I use these either in the morning or the evening but in a very strategic manner. What you put on first MATTERS. And if you want to learn the exact order I do my skincare routine, make sure to sign up for the Bijou skincare weekly schedule below. Order matters – my dermatologist was really strict about this, as she doesn’t want me to mix chemicals that shouldn’t be mixed or clog my pores.
Speaking of order, never put on product if you’re going to the gym. My dermatologist told me it’s the leading cause of acne she’s seeing in the office.
So the products I use every week:
Dr. Dennis Gross Peel Pads – After using these for 2 years, I have noticed my scars have looked better and so have my pores! These truly leave your skin feeling glowed and cleaned. They were recommended to me by my dermatologist and I use them either daily or every other day. I also go between regular and extra strength for important events or occasions. The acids help stimulate collagen to keep skin youthful. You can use these anywhere, by the way. I use it on dry spots and spots exposed to the sun, like my hands. Don’t forget the neck!
Trader Joes Rose Spray – This rosewater spray is so refreshing and I mist this on everyday, sometimes even over makeup to keep things moist and dewy without that oily feeling. Rosewater is quite healing and relaxing, so feel free to spray this on anywhere. I believe it’s under $10 at TJs.
Rosehip Seed Oil – This is the ultimate facial massage oil! It leaves skin looking very healthy and moisturized. I use this oil to do a lymphatic drainage massage. I like it as a makeup base too – I generally don’t need any primer before my makeup when I use this oil. Furthermore, it’s inexpensive, which means it can be a great budget friendly product that makes a difference.
Dr. Dennis Gross Vitamin C Serum – Infused with vitamin C, collagen amino acids, and an energy complex, this serum helps with making my skin feel super smooth and luminous. Because of how pale I am, dullness can be an issue and very obvious but this serum helps create an even texture and color throughout my face. No more dull looking patches (in conjunction with the laser). This is especially great after using the peel pads!
Pixi Glow Tonic – I pop this lovely pixie product on when I don’t want to waste a peel pad for the day. It’s not as potent and certainly doesn’t produce the same results, but it does help when you’re on the go. It does smooth out your skin and is also a great primer.
Cleanser – I don’t have a preference for which cleansers I use, but I try to stick with non fussy ones that are inexpensive. I use cleanser so much, so I want to make sure I get something that is non toxic. Trader Joes makes a good face wash.
