Style Inspiration: Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn – the woman that inspired and dazzled millions with her classy and elegant sophistication, fine acting, and touching humanitarian efforts. To the world, Audrey Hepburn brought a sense of happiness and yearning for those glory days of elegant women and simple but glamorous styles.

Her iconic sense of style still inspires women today, including myself! I remember my first Audrey Hepburn movie, Sabrina, where Audrey plays Sabrina Fairchild, a young woman that falls in love with a rich playboy. At that time, I had heard of the iconic Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but didn’t watch it until much later. Frankly, I much prefer Audrey in her earlier roles where her acting skills and costume choices really resonated with my own style.

What really attracted me to Audrey’s style was that it was too simple to be good. I studied her style choices while off set and was met with the same few pieces all the time. Black cigarette pants, sheath dresses,  full skirts, soft white blouses, headbands, ballet flats, sunglasses. In other words = simple, simple, simple. I understand that being an actress guarantee’s you a certain level of opulence and money, but Audrey never wore anything complicated, flashy, or trendy!

In fact, she wore timeless pieces and was probably one of the first modern ladies to envision and carry out the capsule wardrobe (for inspiration, check out my previous post about building your capsule wardrobe). The beauty of her style is that it’s rather inexpensive to recreate and easy to put together.

I think of Audrey could recall her style mantra she would say something like:

Simplicity, darling

Or something like that…..

Can you imagine it? Her inspiration behind the iconic styles she made famous? Simplicity and easy of choice is at the core of a classic Audrey Hepburn style. And today I’ll show you how to recreate this iconic sense of fashion with a few simple “Audrey – esque” pieces and style rules.

Audrey Style Rules

Rule 1: Keep It Simple, Sister

Audrey’s style is simple to the core. Curate your wardrobe with the most essential pieces you can think of. For inspiration, check out my previous post on building a capsule wardrobe.

What to look for: clothes that are neutral in color, well tailored, not flashy (goodbye sequins, glitter, and that overdone cheetah print),

Rule 2: Dress For Comfort

Audrey dressed for comfort, unlike some ladies today. High heels with snow slush? Audrey would have opted in for winter boots or flats. Working in the garden? Audrey liked getting her hands dirty and wouldn’t coordinate a flowery dress while planting flowers.

The key takeaway here (if it isn’t obvious enough) is that Audrey never cared what anyone thought of what she wore and where she wore it. She loved simple and comfortable clothing for everyday wear. She wouldn’t dream of “suffering in silence” in the name of fashion!

I’m talking to you: ladies that like to wear 6inch heels all day long.

Rule 3: Skip The Trends

I’d like to think that Audrey would laugh at some of our fashion trends today. She’d do it in a classy way though, like covering her smile with a delicate white glove as she watched the runway shows.

But in all seriousness – if you want to recreate Audrey’s iconic style then skip trends. Hey, the 50’s and 60’s were a time of ranging fashion trends too – but Audrey never embraced these trends. She stuck with what worked for her, what she liked, and what was considered “classic”

So if you’d like to start having a simpler and classic wardrobe the first thing to do is stop picking up those fashion magazines and  shopping sales just because.

Yes, I know, I sound contradictory for a fashion blogger, but I’m being honest with you. Trends will not be your friend if you’d like to dress like Audrey!

Rule 4: Highlight Your Best Features

Audrey knew that her legs were her best feature, which is why she highlighted them by wearing cigarette pants, ballet flats, and sheath dresses. I mean, all her features were stunning, but highlighting your best feature will help you get that glamour look without adding extra pieces or accessories.

Find your best feature (we all have one whether it’s a beauty or style feature) and play that up.

Rule 5: Keep The Accessories To A Minimum

Audrey would never be caught dripping with #armcandy and oversized handbags (although she did love her oversized sunglasses). The point being: she never overdid any of her accessorize. It wasn’t go big or go home.

To achieve this simplified accessory game, simply opt in for beautiful pieces that are worn alone. So if you have a dazzling necklace, don’t add sparkly eating ands bracelets to match. The same goes for non jewelry items. If you’re going to have an oversized tote, don’t go all Olsen twin and add chunky layers like blanket scarfs, big floppy hats, or large belt.

I love your analyses and take-always in this article. I do have an “Audrey” capsule wardrobe now thanks to a significant weight loss and select buying. I am learning the simplification of accessories, so that really helped.

I loved all of the wonderful rules and one of my most favorite movies of Audrey’s is Breakfast At Tiffany’s. I watched it years ago with my mom before she passed away and I loved it, because it reminds me of how I was raised as a child to be a lady in life for myself.

I love this post because it is so authentic to who YOU are. I love Audrey as much as the next girl, but I can really tell that you just know her style, aesthetic, and personality from years of your own admiration. I learned so much about Audrey and her style – which is great because I just saw Sabrina and Breakfast at Tiffany’s for the first time in November. I also love her style and quirkiness 🙂 love love love!!!

I am obsessed with Audrey Hepburn! I just love everything about her. When I went on a trip to Europe and heard we could hit Switzerland, the first thing I said was that I needed to see Audrey Hepburns house and grave. It was such a great experience. I think about her often as she was an introvert as well, she was so humble and willing to help anyone (so often people like to help those that can help them in return or only if they have the time) She helped anyone and everyone. She’s by far one of the most amazing women I have read about (I think I have every biography!) Where did you get those images? Getty? There’s like now picture of her I don’t love!
